Project Glimmer would like to introduce one of our Brand Ambassadors, Jamaica King. She has recently transitioned to a full-time social media consultant and content creator. Jamaica King has created a positive and inclusive online presence that focuses on fitness, wellness, and feminine health and we’re thrilled to have her as our Project Glimmer Ambassador! Jamaica offered us insight into her personal and professional journey.

Why are you excited to be a Project Glimmer Ambassador?

I came from humble beginnings; I grew up on a tiny little island in the Pacific with little access to anything really. We had to fly to a nearby island to shop for our school supplies and clothes for the school year, and for most families on our island, that was a luxury. I didn't have much growing up and looking back at my childhood, I wish I had mentors to guide me through my early career development or even opportunities to see what life has to offer. I love Project Glimmer's mission to help young girls get access to basic care products and mentors who can guide them in their careers. I wished this for my younger self and want to support the next generation of girls to have this access.

How did you first become involved in content creation?

I became a content creator by accident. It all started a few years ago when I was bullied about my weight on the internet. I began working out consistently and sharing my journey on Instagram to hold myself accountable. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with fitness and running, which led me to running races around the world for fun and connecting with others who shared similar passions for health and wellness. I grew a small following on Instagram, started a blog, and brands wanted to work with me as a micro influencer. From there, I developed my content creation skills and now I create user-generated content for brands' to use on their own channels. I've created for brands such as SELF Magazine, Ipsy, ChairmanMe and I'm now getting started with Eater!

Can you walk me through your decision to leave your 9-5 and pursue your own dreams?

Once upon a time, my 9-5 was my dream job. But over the years, I've grown, changed, and developed new dreams. I nurtured my passion to inspire and motivate others to go after their goals and dreams on the side. As I saw my content creation services evolve and expand in the last few years, the burning fire inside me grew stronger. I wondered what it would be like to go all in. I didn't want to have any regrets so I decided to leave my 9-5 to explore entrepreneurship. Even if it doesn't work out, I'll be happy I took the risk to find out.

What does a day in your life as a content creator look like?

Everyday looks different. Some days, it's lots of research, scouring the internet, and brainstorming. Other days, it's filming, editing, and attending events. There are also days to do admin work such as answering emails, sending out invoices, reviewing contracts, and other business operation tasks. The best part of it all is you get to set your own schedule, but don't be fooled, content creation is more than snapping a few photos and videos. There's more to it!

How do you cope with imposter syndrome?

Everyone has some level of imposter syndrome and it'll forever come and go. How I deal with it is reminding myself of what really is versus the tricks my mind is playing on me. I keep a journal of accomplishments I'm proud of and positive words I've received from others as a reminder. On the days when imposter syndrome creeps up on me, I pull out my journal and read through it.

What is one piece of advice you have for women that want to break into an emerging platform?

As with anything you want to pursue, make it a priority. This way, you can consistently show up, put in the work, and get closer to your goal. Start now, start small, but make it a priority and see where it'll take you a year from now.

We are so excited to collaborate with Jamaica and raise more awareness for Project Glimmer. You can learn more about Jamaica King by visiting her Instagram and website.
