Spotlight on LaChanze: A Champion for Diversity and Inclusion in the Arts

Blog Post by Valeria Ballesteros

February 2024

As February commemorates Black History Month, Project Glimmer proudly shines a spotlight on our esteemed 2023 Star Award Honoree, the remarkable LaChanze. With a career that has spanned thirty-eight Broadway seasons, LaChanze consistently brings women of complexity and triumph into the cultural lexicon.*

“LaChanze, a Tony award winning Broadway producer and star, is the definition of resilience - living her full life as a 9/11 widow - while raising two amazing daughters and breaking down barriers for Black women on Broadway,” shares Sonja Perkins, Project Glimmer founder. “LaChanze recently won two Tony awards for ‘Kimberly Akimbo’ - still on Broadway - and ‘Topdog|Underdog.’ LaChanze tells powerful stories of complex, resilient, and empowered people.”

“When you see someone who looks like you at the table, then you are inspired to pull up a seat. And if you don’t, then you build a new table.”
